Guardamar, located in the South of Alicante, has one of the most beautiful scenery of our coast. Different civilizations has left their legacy throughout history.
Guardamar del Segurais a city that has taken the beauty of the natural harshness throughout history.
In the estuary of the Segura river it has been a key siting as the keeper of the river. Guardamar was the setting of the Iberian culture, as may be seen in the Cabezo Lucero site where la Dama de Guardamar was found. The Muslim culture had a Rábita where now you could find the dunes in the eastern part of the city.
All these historic traces remains in the Archaeological and Ethnological Museum placed in the Culture House. The city was located in the walled city which centre was the castle you can visit today.
The earthquake of 1829 destroyed this siting forcing the inhabitants to move to the present siting, closer to the coast and with buildings designed to withstand earthquakes. At the end of the last century the new siting was endangered by the advance of the dunes. The problem was solved by planting pines that help to stop the advance of the dunes. This makes
Guardamar del Segura a unique combination of forests and sand. Today, this zone is an enormous Forest Park of 840 hectares, known as the
“dunes of Guardamar”, and declared Natural Interest Space. A good place to walk is the
Reina Sofía Parkmade of autochthonous flora and fauna. It is a beautifully designed spaced with lakes, waterfalls and paths.
The annual festival, on July 25th, will help you to know people´s character.
The traditional food is the union of vegetables and sea.
